Hey don't know if this will help or not, but I was having problems with tethering to my laptop for a while, but I found the solution for me was that I hadn't setup the phone to sync with my laptop, I don't have office on it so I didn't think it would matter, but after a couple of reinstalls with WMDC and drivers, I just happened to by chance set up syncing to the laptop and after that I didn't have a problem with tethering or it recognizing my phone. Btw my phone is the HTC Tilt 8925. Hope that helps.
